Number of patent applications
European patent applications filed with the EPO that are relevant to the biomedical sector.
Business investment in R&D
Research and development (R&D) expenditure within the European Union (EU), according to the business enterprise sector.
Business enterprise R&D expenditure are shown as a percentage of GDP (R&D intensity)
Healthcare expenditure
Expenditure and financing aspects of healthcare (million euro) in the European Union (EU).
Employment in R&D in business enterprise sector
FTE employment of R&D personnel and researchers in business enterprise sector, for Human health and social work activities
Persons reporting a chronic disease
Proportion of the population reporting a specific chronic condition in the past 12 months. Statistics on 5 diseases or chronic conditions are presented:
Asthma
Chronic lower respiratory diseases (excluding asthma)
High blood pressure
Diabetes
Chronic depression

People having a long-standing illness or health problem
Chronic morbidity measured as self-reported longstanding illness or health problem of a duration of at least six months (percentage of the population). Source: Eurostat
Healthy life years
Number of remaining years that a person of specific age is expected to live without any severe or moderate health problems. Source: Eurostat
Severity of current depressive symptoms
Distribution of the population according to severity of current depressive symptoms (annual percentage of population). Depending on the number and frequency of symptoms, their severity can be characterised: ‘None to minimal, Mild, Moderate, Moderately severe and Severe’. Source: Eurostat
Current depressive symptoms
Distribution of the population according to current depressive symptoms (annual percentage of the population) using modalities:
– Major depressive symptoms
– Other depressive symptom
– Any depressive symptoms
Source: Eurostat
Number of novel drugs approved
Number of ‘positive opinions’ issued by the European Medical Agency (EMA) in a given year.
Number of patent applications
Number of registered patent applications with the European Patent Office (EPO) per country of residence of applicant over time.
Number of New Molecular Entities (NMEs) approved
Number of New Active Substances approved by the European Medical Agency in a given year. A New Active Substance is defined as “a chemical substance not previously authorised as a medicinal product in the European Union”
Number of patents awarded
Number of new patents granted by the European Patent Office (EPO) by EU country and year that the patent was granted.
Mortality
‘Crude death rate’ – the ratio of the number of deaths in a given year to the population in that year, by EU country, sex, and age over time
Morbidity
Percentage of of the population reporting that they have a longstanding health issue that has persisted for 6 months or more, by EU country and sex over time.
Duration of working life
The number of years a person aged 15 is expected to be active in the labour market throughout their life by EU country over time.
Employment in R&D in business enterprise sector
Full-time equivalent employment of R&D personnel and researchers in the business enterprise sector filtered by individuals working in human health and social work activities, by EU country over time. Source: Eurostat.
Disciplines covered by FP7 and H2020 health projects
Number of projects for each discipline covered by FP7 and H2020 health projects. The disciplines are defined according to the CORDIS taxonomy and segmented into a high-level research field (Taxonomy_High_level) and a more specific discipline (Taxonomy_Specific).
Level of cross-sectoral collaboration
The level of cross-sectoral collaboration is based on the number of different types of participating organisations for a project. Organisation types are classified as: Higher or secondary education (HES), Private for profit (excluding education) (PRC), Public body (excluding research & education) (PUB), Research organisations (REC), Other (OTH). The ‘Low’ score represents projects with the participation of one or two types of organisation, the ‘Medium’ score represents projects with the participation of 3 to 4 organisation types and the ‘High’ score represents projects with all organisation types represented.
Level of international collaboration on projects
The level of international collaboration is based on the number of different countries listed as project participants. The ‘Low’ score represents projects with the participation of one or two countries, the ‘Medium’ score represents projects with the participation of 3 to 6 countries and the ‘High’ score represents projects with more than 6 participating countries.
Level of project interdisciplinarity
The level of project interdisciplinarity is based on the number of research themes associated with a project. The ‘Low’ score represents projects with one or two research themes, the ‘Medium’ score represents projects with 3 research themes and the ‘High’ score represents projects with more than 3 research themes. Research themes are classified according to the taxonomy found in the Cordis database.
European Commission Funding for Health Projects
Funding committed by the European Commission to the project as part of the H2020 or FP7 funding programmes.
Air emissions accounts for human health activities
Annual emissons greenhouse gases and air pollutants for Human health activities (as classified by NACE Rev. 2 activity) in terms of tonnes of CO2, N2O in CO2 equivalent, CH4 in CO2 equivalent, HFC in CO2 equivalent, PFC in CO2 equivalent, SF6 in CO2 equivalent, NF3 in CO2 equivalent.
Net emissions (MtCO2e)
National health care emissions, showing net emissions (MtCO2e)
Self-perceived health by sex, age and labour status
Percentage of the population rating their self-perceived health as “very good”, by sex, age and labour status.
Healthy life expectancy based on self-perceived health
Healthy life expectancy in absolute values at birth based on self-perceived health.
Carbon footprint of health system
The carbon footprint of a health system corresponds to the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that the sector produces through activities such as energy consumption, transport, and product manufacture, use, and disposal.
Level of uptake of vaccines
Represents the share of one-year-olds who have been immunised against a disease or a pathogen across 12 diseases or pathogens.
Views of the public on science and scientists
Total number of Special Eurobarometer 516 survey respondents across countries that stated “Science and technology make our lives easier, healthier and more comfortable”.
Average level of educational attainment
Percentage of the population by level of educational attainment (tertiary education, levels 5-8)
