Number of New Molecular Entities (NMEs) approved

Number of New Active Substances approved by the European Medical Agency in a given year. A New Active Substance is defined as “a chemical substance not previously authorised as a medicinal product in the European Union”

This provides an indication of new drugs being brought to market, the end point of drug development at which those interventions are deemed effective and can be made available to the public. This provides one measure of the innovative output of the research system. However, not all health and biomedical research projects are aimed at producing this type of product, so this only provides a partial picture. Source: European Medicines Agency
